How to Wear and Care for Verillas Boots!

How to Wear

Here are the steps to follow the first time you lace up your new Verillas boots!

  1. Make sure you are wearing the type of socks you intend to regularly wear under your boots. This ensures that, once your boots are adjusted, they will be easy to get on and off whether they have a zipper or not.
  2. If your boots have a zipper, be sure to zip the boots all the way up before adding the laces or fastening any buckles.
  3. If your boots came with a decorative V Logo slider, add those to your laces before adding the laces to your boots. The aglets (metal thingies at the ends of the laces) need a small amount of pressure to go through the holes on the slider. Once on the laces, slide the logo plate to the center of each lace before beginning to lace the boots.
  4. Lace your boots from the bottom up using the lacing style of your choice. Boots should fit snug but not too tight.
  5. Once you have completed lacing you can fasten any buckles or straps on your boots.
  6. You’re done! If your boots have a zipper, you should now be able to easily get your footwear on or off without adjusting the laces or buckles. Enjoy!

How to Care

Clean: Dirt and debris can be removed using a clean microfiber cloth and Saddle Soap or a liquid leather cleaner. Saddle Soap is a solid waxy substance that can be scooped out of the tub it comes in and applied directly to the boots. Liquid leather cleaner sometimes comes with a pump top to make application easier. If not, a small amount can be poured over the cloth and allowed to absorb before applying to the boots. Both products are applied using gentle circular motions on the entirety of the boot exterior. Being gentle is important! If small sand particles or dirt are rubbed too hard while cleaning, they may scratch the leather. Be sure to buff away any extra product before moving on to the next step.

Condition: Once your boots have been cleaned of dirt and debris, they need to be conditioned. Even soap designed for leather leaves the material slightly more dried out than before being cleaned. Leather conditioner restores moisture and shine to footwear. Same as the soap, conditioner should be applied using a clean microfiber cloth, using gentle circular motions. Once a good amount of conditioner has been wiped over the entire outer surface of the boots they should be left overnight to absorb. The next day, be sure to wipe away any excess conditioner still sitting on the surface of the leather. Alternatively, if the boots still feel stiff and dry, more conditioner may be applied.

Seal: While not entirely necessary, adding a sealer to your boots after they have been cleaned and conditioned means you can go longer between cleanings and will have less breakdown of the leather over time. If you want your boots to last a lifetime, this is definitely a step you don’t want to skip. Sealer comes in a few different forms and is applied differently depending on the kind you get. Be sure to read the directions for the sealer you choose to properly apply it to your footwear.

Store: Your Verillas leather boots are more than simple footwear, they are also pieces of individually handcrafted art. Same as paintings or other forms of art, they can be damaged if improperly displayed or stored. Boots should be stored in a room temperature, dry location such as a closet or wardrobe. If you wish to display your boots when not wearing them, make sure that they won’t be exposed to direct sun from a nearby window or skylight. Tall boots should be stored laying on their side, or should have something added to the insides so they can be stored upright without sagging. We offer boot stretchers on our website, but pool noodles cut to length or a rolled up towel can also provide support for boots being stored upright. NEVER STORE YOUR BOOTS WET! If your boots have become water soaked due to being worn in the rain or on a hiking trail, be sure to leave them out to dry before conditioning and storing them. Water can be extremely dehydrating to leather and can overall shorten the lifespan of your boots. So remember, store clean and dry!
